My relationship with SWAIA is a long standing and fruitful one. In the summer of 1990, SWAIA was the first Native arts organization to officially recognize me as a professional artists in the Santa Fe Indian Market. Since then, the relationship has grown and evolved.
The painting selected for the 2008 Santa Fe Indian Market poster reflects this pattern of evolution and change as well. The central image of the deer dancer, powerful, imposing, is juxtaposed with swirling, gestural paint marks and drips. Primary reds and violet skies offset the central composition of the dancer. Timeless, archaic elements of Pueblo culture are juxtaposed with contemporary abstract expressionist palette knife and brush work. Overall, the painting develops a rhythmic, hypnotic, trancelike feeling which is referential to the metaphysical space of the Pueblo dance itself.
